Emil Simon, a conductor, composer and professor, leader of “Transilvania” Philharmonic of Cluj Napoca, and director thereof between April 1988 and June 2000, demised. The artist was born on the 24th of September 1936 and started his piano lessons at the age of 6. He studied orchestral conducting with Antonin Ciolan and composition with Sigismund Toduţă, at “Gh. Dima” Academy of Cluj, also receiving the “George Enescu” Scholarship. He improved his skills in Paris, under the guidance of Nadia Boulanger, Manuel Rosenthal, Olivier Messiaen, and afterwards in Prague and Stockholm, where he was guided by Sergiu Celibidache. He collaborated with the great music establishments in the country and was invited to conduct prestigious ensembles in Europe, America and the Far East, his repertory including over 3,000 titles performed in more than 1,500 concerts, a vast repertory consisting of all styles and epochs, with special emphasis on the music of our century (with 700 first auditions of Romanian and universal music), many such works being recorded at the radio and on television or edited on disks. In 1999, the publications in Cluj granted to him the “Excellence Award” in the domain of culture. Also, he was nominated among the 2,000 prominent cultural personalities of the 20th century by Cambridge University. In 2001, he was elected “Citizen of Honour” of the City of Cluj Napoca. The Presidency of Romania granted to him the Order of “Faithful Service” in Rank of Knight. His colleagues, members of CREDIDAM, lament the demise of Emil Simon, a senior of the stick, a complete professional and an example of talent and commitment. May God forgive him!
